Hobart Gig Guide – May 2017

The weather is cooling off, but May will be a hot, hot month of live music in Hobart Town.

The likes of American punk rock royalty Against Me!, Australian alt-rock heroes Killing Heidi and Aussie folk-punk favourites the Smith Street Band will all be gracing Hobart stages in May. Here’s the lowdown of what you can expect from a delicious-looking month of live music in the state.

4th of May- Against Me! Supported by Camp Cope @ The Brisbane Hotel

Fans of Punk, rejoice! Against Me! are touring our parts as part of their sideshows for the bumper Groovin’ The Moo festival. With their up-tempo, urgent and captivating tunes, accompanied by Australian favourites Camp Cope, this is guaranteed to be a stellar night. 6th of May- Killing Heidi @ The Goods Shed

With the band last releasing a studio album back in the stone ages of 2002, the prospect of seeing Killing Heidi is as exciting as it is nostalgic. The band will be rocking out the Goods Shed with their anthems from the 2000’s. If you’re missing the ISO red room and are ready to take a step back in time, do not miss out! 7th of May – Yirrmal @ Willie Smith’s Apple Shed

A Sunday afternoon sipping on some of Tasmania’s finest cider sounds pretty great, but add in the passionate sounds of Arnhem Land artist Yirrmal, and your afternoon couldn’t be better. 1.00pm start and admission will be free.

12th of May – Set Mo @ The Waratah

13th of May- Polish Club @ Republic Bar

Polish Club are one of the more vibrant and exciting acts to see this May. Coming off the back of a support slot for Northeast Party House in 2016 and the release of their debut album Alright Already in early 2017, they are simply a must see. The band gives off a unique feel blues rock sound, with similarities to the iconic Kings of Leon, they are sure to excite fans with their up tempo live energy. Do not miss this. 20th of May – Close Counters @ The Waratah

Finn Rees and Allan McConnell have quickly cemented a reputation as some of the finest beat-makers in the state, with their distinct future beat perfectly blending the worlds of electronica, hip hop and jazz. After spending much of 2016 in Europe, Close Counters are back and are sure to lift the roof off the Waratah. 20th of May – Wolfmother @ Granada Tavern

Australian rock royalty will be tearing the roof off of the Granada Tavern later in May when Wolfmother bring their Gypsy Caravan tour to the Apple Isle. On their first major national tour in years fans can expect a set full of Wolfmother stoner and fuzz rock classics and tracks off of the band’s latest record Victorious. 25th of May- The Smith Street Band @ The Odeon Theatre
